How to get a 30 Study Score in VCE General Maths

1. You do have to score significantly higher in General Maths..

VCE General Maths, as compared to VCE Maths Methods, requires the person to make far less mistakes.

While in VCE Maths Methods you're able to get away with scoring around a pass in the exams and maybe around 60% in the SACs, in General Maths you have to score more like 80% (to even 90%) in the SACs and exams to get an equivalent score.

Here are a guideline of scores you need to achieve in VCE General Maths to get a study score of 30 based on the 2024 VCE General Maths mark distribution.

2. What score do you need in your SACs?

Given that VCE General Maths is scaled down, you want to get 70% to 80% in your SACs in order to secure yourself a study score of 30.

This is based on the fact that 1) the average mark is 65% to 74%, and that would get a 30 which is generally marked down to a 28 and 2) around the top 22% score at least 84%, which is an equivalent study score of around 35, which would be marked down to 33.

This of course varies from school to school because each school makes up their own assessments and the academic prowess of the students is varied, but this is sort of a general guide.

3. What score do you need in the Exams?

Given that VCE General Maths is scaled down, you want to get in the 70%'s in both exams to get around a 30.

Again, while the average score is somewhere around 50 or 60%, you need to get a little bit higher in these in order to compensate for the fact that the subject gets marked down.

4. How to maximise your score.

Now if you want to maximise your score in the exam, the most important thing is that you do plenty of exam questions under timed conditions, questions which are directly from the real VCE General Maths exam or ones which are very close.

For FREE, we happen to have every exam made for VCE General Maths split up into topic tests and mini-tests so that you can complete these regularly. Each test is under 20 minutes long so you could do one a night if you were so motivated to and this will make a massive impact on your score.

The curriculum is basically the same with a few minor differences. However, the exam questions are quite different from state to state, so while you can learn the content from anyone, you want to practise questions specifically for your own state (you can access ALL exam questions for FREE here).

To be a little more specific: General Maths tutors in Melbourne specialise in VCE General Maths, General Maths tutors in Brisbane specialise in QCAA General Maths, WACE Mathematics Applications (ATAR course), General Maths tutors in Adelaide or Darwin specialise in SACE General Maths (NT uses South Australian Curriculum) and General Maths tutors in Hobart specialise in TASC General Maths.
